In order to provide good device drivers for Free Software operating systems, hardware document-ation is essential. Unfortunately some hardware manufacturers have been very reluctant to provide this documentation as they consider it valuable intellectual property (IP).
The situation has improved as Linux has become mainstream and accepted by industry. However, the problem obtaining hardware documentation hasn’t yet been solved. This talk will discuss methods and techniques for obtaining hardware documentation as well as what one can do when the hardware manufacturer does not wish to play the game.
